TUCSON TICKLER

March is a great time to escape the dreary end of winter and soak up the sun in Tucson while the rest of the USA is beginning to thaw out.

Matt Benston and Katrina Cooper are happy to Host a Rally for our group in Tucson, AZ the week of March 19-26, 2023. With 7 days, and much to do, we will have two free days and a large list of suggested idea of places to go and things to do.

Our planned activities include a dinner planned by your hosts on the first night. The next day we will take a visit to the Pima Air and Space Museum. The trolley Tours through the AMARG from the Pima Air & Space Museum have been on hold indefinitely but there is much to learn just wandering amongst the historical aircraft and listening to stories from the docents.

A visit to Sonoran Desert Museum. The museum is more of an educational zoo showcasing the plants, animals, birds, and invertebrates which live in the Sonoran Desert. I have a neighbor who is a docent at the Sonoran Desert Museum and I am working to arrange a group tour and a catered box lunch for everyone. Weather permitting, the Red Tailed Hawk demonstration is a must.

Also planned is a caravan up the Catalina Highway from the 2500' city elevation to Mount Lemon's 9500' climes showing a diverse ecology from Sonoran Desert floor to the forest of the Canadian Rockies. We will have lunch at the top, in the town of Summerhaven. If you enjoy hiking, many trails are available from there. If you're adventurous and up for a fun drive, the dirt road down the back past Peppersauce Canyon ends up in Oracle. 4WD not required but recommended.

It just so happens that on Saturday March 25th (and Sunday the 26th) there is an Open House at the Davis- Monthan Air Force Base they will be featuring the USAF Thunderbirds. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to showcase where I worked for 20 years with DHS-CBP-AMO Tucson Air Branch. The base and its tenants (and even local supporting agencies) are sure to put on a great show.

Those are highlights of the week, and I'm accumulating a list of many other activities you might want to experience all within a couple hours' drive while enjoying the many surrounding mountain ranges.

Come join the fun in Tucson. Though many RV events may be occurring here, maybe you weren't able to make one. March is a wonderful time of year to visit. Please don’t forget to let me know you are coming. Matt Bentson-#520-820-1039.

There are currently 7 spots reserved as of November. I hope you made plans as Tucson is a 'snow bird' paradise.

These are just a few of the events that the Threatts have planned for the Albuquerque Rally this spring. We will attend the Gathering of Nations, which is the last weekend of the month. We will ride the Road Runner Express from Albuq. to Santa Fe for the day. This trip will probably include lunch in Santa Fe. We will have lunch one day at a winery near Albuquerque's Old Town and then visit iconic church and plaza as well as the shops in old town. There will be more to come, stay tuned..........

The rest of the story...........

It’s getting closer that time again. Make your reservations now for the Albuquerque rally. We are looking forward to having a great turnout and a great Rally! Below is a tentative schedule. This will be tweaked as we get closer to Rally time. We will try to have at least one potluck supper during the rally and hope to have some visits to wineries or brewhouse pubs. For those who like beer, Albuquerque is one of the top destinations in the US for craft breweries.

There are many things to do in ABQ. We will discuss this at happy hour on Sunday. Things to do range from riding the Tram up to the top of the Sandias and have lunch at the Cafe up there. Or, for those who like to hike, you can drive to the top of the Sandias and hike over to the Cafe. Or you can hike the Sandia ridge trail, which is about 4 miles round trip. Difficulty is moderate. We have hiked this trail many times and it is well worth the effort. There are many other great hikes in and around ABQ. There are also many great museums and attractions. Contact us if you have any questions.

We will venture out to the tallest sand dunes in North America for our Stargazing/Pajama Party. We will do a little walking and viewing of the planets/ constellations and meteors. The Milky Way should be gorgeous. Bring your telescopes, binoculars, and star charts. Who knows maybe you will catch a falling star.

Oklahoma City, OK Teaser - September 25-30

Yes this is Oklahoma City! If you haven't seen it you need to go.

**Plan a trip back east, but be sure to stop in on your way either coming or going. Or, just make it a destination. This wonderful couple came to our rally in Angel Fire, NM as guests and volunteered to host a rally in OK City. It's their hometown and they want to show it off.

One of the most moving sites in OK City is the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, which honors the victims of the 1995 OK City bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. Then we will visit the First American Museum which honors the history and tradition of the thirty-nine tribal nations residing in Oklahoma. Some cultural objects have been returned to the museum from the Smithsonian Museum.

We will also visit the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum which hosts the Rodeo Hall of Fame and honors the greatest performers in the history of this great American sport.

In your spare time you can go for a forty minute boat ride along the Bricktown Canal on the Water Taxi and stop in the arts and entertainment district for a visit to the Banjo museum or have some lunch or dinner at Earls Rib Palace or maybe Pearl's Crabtown.

On the last day we will tour the beautiful state capitol building, completed in 1917. The dome, which was in the original design plans was not built until 2002. The most unique thing is the building is surrounded by working oil wells.

Dewey & Lou Berry are new members of Cuarto Estados and will be Hosts for the Rally. Make you reservations first then contact the Berrys.

RALLY INFO

We’re excited to plan the Willcox October 2023 rally! Located in the Sulphur Springs Valley, Willcox is a fertile agricultural area with pick-your-own farms and orchards like those at Apple Annie’s. The weekend we are there is the Rex Allen Days festival. The Rex Allen Museum honors the life and career of a 1950s Western film and singing legend known as the "Arizona Cowboy," in his hometown. John Schneider, of Dukes of Hazard, performs that weekend along with a variety of other artists. There are concerts, rodeos and tons of activities. We have arranged for a private tour of the Rex Allen Museum and a walking tour highlighting the architecture of Willcox. We can tour the Amerind Museum, drive up to the Chirachaua Monument. The ancestral home of the Chiricahua Apache Native American tribe, in the Chiricahua Mountains, is a sky island called “a wonderland of rocks.” Access Chiricahua National Monument state park here and explore its 8-mile paved scenic drive and 17-miles of day-use hiking trails past volcanic rock spires called “hoodoos.”  We are working on wine tastings at a vineyard and hopefully a tour of Aridus winery including the crushing room. This is the largest crushing room in AZ and they actually crush for other vineyards. (Generally the crushing room is off limits. 🤞🏻🤞🏻) This up-and-coming wine grape-growing region with a cluster of outstanding vineyards and wineries making up a wine trail.
There are some amazing restaurants in the area too! Dinner one night at La Vinca. Genuine Mexican cuisine like in the Baja and the best chicken mole I have ever eaten! Very small restaurant with a huge patio which will accommodate us all. Very inexpensive.
